Getting started with precedent research

Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals


  • This database will be your best bet to find articles and images used for precedent research.

  • You can find this database from the TTU Library Homepage under “Databases A-Z” or on the Architecture Libguide under "Journal Articles"

  • Your best search terms will include the name of the building and the location, but can also include the type of building or style or the architect

  • Search term examples: Kimbell Art Museum AND Kahn, Kimbell Art Museum AND Texas, Louis Kahn AND museum

Understanding an Avery Record


When you find an article possibly relevant to your research, click the title to go to the Avery record. The details section outlines the information in the article, this will be found under the abstract of the article in the middle of the page.

Finding it in the Library


When you find an article that has the information you need, you need to see if Texas Tech Libraries has access to that article.

On top right of the record page, you’ll click “Get it” which will direct you back to the TTU Library catalog where you'll see if it's available online, in print, or through Document Delivery options
