A House Is Not Just a House by
A House Is Not Just a House argues precisely that. The book traces Tatiana Bilbao's diverse work on housing ranging from large-scale social projects to single-family luxury homes. These projects offer a way of thinking about the limits of housing: where it begins and where it ends. Regardless of type, her work advances an argument on housing that is simultaneously expansive and minimal, inseparable from the broader environment outside of it and predicated on the fundamental requirements of living. Working within the turbulent history of social housing in Mexico, Bilbao argues for participating even when circumstances are less than ideal--and from this participation she is able to propose specific strategies learned in Mexico for producing housing elsewhere. A House Is Not Just a House includes a recent lecture by Bilbao at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, as well as reflections from fellow practitioners and scholars, including Amale Andraos, Gabriela Etchegaray, Hilary Sample, and Ivonne Santoyo-Orozco.
Tatiana Bilbao: Perspectives by
Located in Mexico City, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio is well known internationally for its use of traditional Mexican construction techniques, the highly sculptural effects of its buildings and its unusually collaborative approach toward each client. The first authoritative collection of drawings by legendary modern architect Lina Bo Bardi Lina Bo Bardi (1914-92) was one of the most prolific and visionary architects of the twentieth century. Raised in Italy under Mussolini's Fascist regime and emigrating to Brazil after World War II, she championed the power of architecture and design to embrace everyday life. Her boldly modernist designs range from concrete-and-glass structures like the São Paulo Museum of Art and the culture and leisure center SESC Pompéia to furniture and jewelry. This is the first book to examine one of the most intimate and expressive features of her life and work, but one she rarely shared with the public--drawing. Bo Bardi produced thousands of drawings in her lifetime, from picturesque landscapes drawn when she was a child, to sketches made as part of her daily routine as an architect, to fanciful drawings that show different aspects of her private life. In this beautifully illustrated book, Zeuler Lima, the world's leading authority on Bo Bardi, brings together a careful selection of these and other drawings, many of them never published until now. Bo Bardi drew on card stock, tracing paper, regular paper, and newsprint. She used pencils, watercolor, gouache, ballpoint pens, and felt-tips, producing drawings that combined surrealist elements with an eye for color and joyful forms. TALLER: Community Development Center Los Chocolates by
Community Development Center Los Chocolates was conceived as part of a program to reactivate a rundown area in Carolina, one of the most traditional neighborhoods of downtown Cuernavaca. The architects--Mauricio Rocha and Gabriela Carrillo of the firm TALLER--began with a community consultation to explore what form and function the building should take. These sessions revealed that the community wanted a multipurpose venue containing cultural and recreational facilities. TALLER developed a plan for a flexible, environmentally sustainable structure; despite a relatively small physical footprint, the building incorporates spaces for theater, music, painting, art exhibitions, sports activities and more. TALLER: Community Development Center Los Chocolates analyzes the design and realization of the building, from consultations through to construction, and concludes with a look at how the completed building and gardens are being used by the local community.

Echoes of a Land features contributions by 21 participants, architects and designers as a proposal for the Mexican Pavilion at the Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition in 2018. X-Ray Architecture by
This book explores the impact of medical discourse and diagnostic technologies on the formation, representation, and reception of modern architecture. It challenges the normal understanding of modern architecture by proposing that the architecture of the early twentieth century was shaped by the dominant medical obsession of its time: tuberculosis and its primary diagnostic tool, the X-ray.If architectural discourse has from its beginning associated building and body, the body that it describes is the medical body, reconstructed by each new theory of health. Modern architects pre- sented their architecture as a kind of medical instrument for protecting and enhancing the body. X-ray technology and modern architecture were born around the same time and evolved in parallel. While the X-ray exposed the inside of the body to the public eye, the modern building unveiled its interior, inverting the relationship between private and public.Colomina suggests that if we want to talk about the state of the art in buildings, we should look to the dominant obsessions about illness and the latest techniques of imaging the body-and ask what effects they may have on the way we conceive architecture. AUTHOR: Beatriz Colomina is founding director of the program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University and Professor in the School of Architecture. The redesign of Lincoln Center is one of the most challenging and innovative civic projects in recent urban history. Over the past eight years, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R), in close collaboration with FXFOWLE, Beyer Blinder Belle and Lincoln Center's leadership, has transformed the 50-year-old modernist citadel into a porous and democratic campus. This visually rich document is the first comprehensive book to feature the extensive redevelopment in its entirety. Lincoln Center Inside Out details DS+R's interpretation of the modernist project after several generations of social and political change. Eileen Gray by
Eileen Gray started her career as a lacquer artist in Paris creating new furniture and living accessories with striking colors and understated shapes. Remaining stalwartly independent, Gray developed an opulent, luxuriant take on geometric forms and industrially produced materials. Her Bibendum chair and E-1027 table today are familiar icons across the world; the ship-shaped home she designed and built on a cliff near Monaco was hailed as a triumph of deluxe modern living; her Dragon chair fetched $28 million at a YSL sale. Her flamboyant beauty captured by photographer Berenice Abbott made her an admired figure among American expatriates such as Gertrude Stein and William Somerset Maugham. Her archives bombed during World War II, she was largely forgotten when one-time peers like Le Corbusier were lionized as visionaries. Rediscovered in 1960, she is today a celebrated pioneer of modern design.
Eileen Gray by
Irish-born designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) was an extremely private figure and has remained an elusive subject despite her long-lasting influence. Known primarily for her highly original furniture and interior design, Gray realized nine buildings in her lifetime and recorded more than 45 architectural projects in her archive, although several of her built projects were attributed, until very recently, solely to her collaborator, Romanian architect Jean Badovici. After briefly studying art in London and Paris, Gray settled in Paris in 1907 and began designing sumptuous lacquer furniture, wool carpets, and draperies that reflected the sensual luxury of traditional French decorative arts. Beginning in the mid-1920s, and influenced by the modern movement, she turned to architecture. Her most renowned project, the villa E.1027 on the coast of southern France, interprets Corbusian spatial principles and forms to become a fundamental example of Modernist architecture. This monograph embodies the first ever in-depth study of Gray's entire career, providing a generously illustrated analysis of her early designs as well as her work as an architect beginning in 1926. It draws on a diverse wealth of archival material, plans, drawings and photographs - including many of Gray's own - to place this fascinating individual in the context of contemporary movements in design and architecture as well as twentieth-century social and cultural history in general.

Hariri & Hariri exemplifies the spirit of the emerging generation of architects. Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri, Iranian-born, Cornell-educated sisters, opened their New York City practice in 1986. At that time, writes esteemed architectural historian Kenneth Frampton, their work "first broke upon the New York scene, with the publication of a single spiral staircase executed in bent plate steel . . . an archetypal modern image set in a different key." Since then, the Hariris have designed a great variety of projects that add tonal and thematic variation to the unique notes in that "different key." They are working, says one commentator, "in a twenty-first century, space age mode." Thirty of their works are shown in this book, including a number of apartment renovations in New York, several houses throughout North America and Europe, competition entries (for both theoretical and commissioned projects), and custom furniture and lighting for many of the interiors, some of which are now in production. Public Works, Unsolicited Small Projects for the Big Dig by
Boston's Big Dig was the most expensive urban public work in U.S. history. The city's elevated six-lane highway, called the Central Artery, and the two tunnels under Boston Harbor, were some of the most congested, accident-prone motorways in the United States. The city's solution, nicknamed The Big Dig, was to replace the elevated highway with a series of eight-to-ten-lane underground expressways. Public Works presents a series of 14 disarmingly modest, speculative interventions by the Boston-based MY Studio, a multidisciplinary design firm operating in the space between architecture, art and landscape. Collectively, these interventions expose, connect and reconfigure the relationship between the underground expressways and the new parks that emerged in the Big Dig's wake, demonstrating the effect design can have on our conception of public space.

The Function of Form by
In The Function of Form, internationally acclaimed architect, Farshid Moussavi, provides a provocative critique of the historically opposing relationship between function and form to reveal the contradiction at the heart of modernism. The Function of Ornament by
Architecture needs mechanisms that allow it to become connected to culture. It achieves this by continually capturing the forces that shape society as material to work with. Architecture's materiality is therefore a composite one, made up of visible forces (structural, functional, physical) as well as invisible forces (cultural, political, temporal). Architecture progresses through new concepts that connect with these forces, manifesting itself in new aesthetic compositions and affects. Ornament is the by-product of this process, through which architectural material is organized to transmit unique affects. This book is a graphic guide to ornaments in the twentieth century. It unveils the function of ornament as the agent for specific affects, dismantling the idea that ornament is applied to buildings as a discrete or non-essential entity. Each case operates through greater or lesser depth to exploit specific synergies between the exterior and the interior, constructing an internal order between ornament and material. These internal orders produce expressions that are contemporary, yet whose affects are resilient in time.

What is the function of style today? If the 1970s were defined by Postmodernism and the 1980s by Deconstruction, how do we characterize the architecture of the 1990s to the present? Charlotte Perriand by
Charlotte Perriand is one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century interior design. Together with her contemporaries and collaborators Pierre Jeanneret and Le Corbusier, she created many pieces of furniture we now consider classics, including the instantly recognizable LC4 chaise. Her pioneering work with metal was particularly instrumental in paving the way for the machine-age aesthetic popular throughout the 1920s and '30s. The first volume in a planned four-part series, this lavishly book looks at Perriand's early life: her education, her work in photography, her early interest in pre-fab residential architecture, and her years spent working with Le Corbusier at his studio on the Rue de Sèvres in Paris. While most are familiar with Perriand's game-changing design work, the book also documents her less widely known involvement with leftist groups and her desire for social change that drove her to create affordable and appealing furniture for the masses. Influenced by this and her participation in the International Congresses of Modern Architecture, Perriand turned in the 1930s to more inexpensive natural materials like cane and wood. In 1927, the French designer Charlotte Perriand -- then only twenty-four years old -- won instant acclaim for her design for the "Bar sous le toit" (bar in the garret), shown at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. The project brought her to the attention of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, who asked Perriand to join their atelier. There she was put in charge of the furniture and fittings program and worked on such legendary designs as the sculptural chaise longue, the grand confort chair, and the fauteuil ? dossier basculant (sling chair). Well known for her fundamental contribution to modern design, Perriand's adventurous life is somewhat more of an enigma. Her autobiography, Charlotte Perriand: A Life of Creation -- published in France in 1998 -- is the first major English-language volume on her career and personal history. Immediate and matter of fact, the text echoes Perriand's own direct character; the dozens of black-and-white photographs are for the most part drawn from her own archive. In addition to her association with Le Corbusier, Perriand recounts her experiences in Russia, the Far East, and South America; she also discusses the projects she worked on after leaving Le Corbusier's atelier in 1937, ranging from a vast ski resort at Les Arcs to the "espace th " (tea area) in the UNESCO garden in Paris. Her friendships with the great artists of the period, such as Fernand L ger, offer valuable insight into the artistic scene of the time. Perriand's fascinating memoir is unique not only in its firsthand depiction of the goals and tenets of the heroic period of modern architecture but also in its portrayal of a century of life in Paris.

Authorship critically examines emergent themes in contemporary architecture by revisiting the seemingly defunct notion of design authorship. As we revel in the death of the master architect, how do we come to terms with the shifting role of creativity in architecture's cultural production? In Authorship, a cross-disciplinary group of designers and scholars explores this topic through a myriad of lenses. Subjects include the impact of digital tools and computational scripts on the conception of buildings in the age of robotics, the current climate of appropriation and sampling as a counter-form of authorship, and the rise of reauthored materials in a postdigital age. Not Quite Architecture by
An exploration of published and unpublished writings of Alison and Peter Smithson, considering them in the context of the debates and discourses of postwar architecture. The English architects Alison Smithson (1928-1993) and Peter Smithson (1923-2003) were ringleaders of the New Brutalism, active in CIAM and Team 10, and influential in English Pop Art. The Smithsons, who met as architecture students, built only a few buildings but wrote prolifically throughout their career, leaving a body of writings that consider issues in architecture and urbanism and also take up subjects that are "not quite architecture" (the name of a series of articles written by Alison Smithson for the Architects' Journal)--including fashion design, graphic communication, and children's tales. In this book, M. Christine Boyer explores the Smithsons' writings--books, articles, lectures, unpublished manuscripts, and private papers. She focuses on unpublished material, reading the letter, the scribbled note, the undelivered lecture, the scrapbook, the "magic box," as words in the language of modern architectural history--especially that of postwar England, where the Smithsons and other architects were at the center of the richest possible range of cultural encounters. Boyer is "writing around" the Smithsons' work by considering the cultural contexts in which they formed and wrote about their ideas. Boyer explains that the Smithsons were intensely concerned with the responsibility of the architect to ensure the quality of place, to build with lyrical appropriateness. They reached back to the country landscapes of their childhood and, Boyer argues, mixed their brand of New Brutalism with the English Picturesque. The Smithsons saw architects as both inheritors and passers-on. Their writings offer juxtapositions and connections, resembling an association of interactive loops, ideas waiting to be transmuted into built form.

Pamela Burton Landscapes by
Pamela Burton begins every garden or landscape project, no matter the size, with a big idea. In her design for the Santa Monica Public Library, Burton created a series of courtyards that weave the interior spaces together, and are integrated with the library as a metaphor for bringing light to the world beneath the surface of the ocean, in the same way that she perceives libraries bringing knowledge to light. Working with Moore, Ruble, Yudell Architects, Burton's landscape designreinforces the library's civic quality. Receptive to the nuances and idiosyncrasies of a site but unafraid to explore the world of ideas, Burton has established herself as a leading figure within the enduring legacy of California modern landscape design. Cornelia Hahn Oberlander by
Cornelia Hahn Oberlander is one of the most important landscape architects of the twentieth century, yet despite her lasting influence, few outside the field know her name. Her work has been instrumental in the development of the late-twentieth-century design ethic, and her early years working with architectural luminaries such as Louis Kahn and Dan Kiley prepared her to bring a truly modern--and audaciously abstract--sensibility to the landscape design tradition. In Cornelia Hahn Oberlander: Making the Modern Landscape, Susan Herrington draws upon archival research, site analyses, and numerous interviews with Oberlander and her collaborators to offer the first biography of this adventurous and influential landscape architect. Born in 1921, Oberlander fled Nazi Germany at the age of eighteen with her family, going on to become one of the few women to graduate from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in the late 1940s. For six decades she has practiced socially responsible and ecologically sensitive planning for public landscapes, including the 1970s design of the Robson Square landscape and its adjoining Provincial Law Courts--one of Vancouver's most famous spaces. Herrington places Oberlander within a larger social and aesthetic context, chronicling both her personal and professional trajectory and her work in New York, Philadelphia, Vancouver, Seattle, Berlin, Toronto, and Montreal. Oberlander is a progenitor of some of the most significant currents informing landscape architecture today, particularly in the area of ecological focus. In her thorough biography, Herrington draws much-deserved attention to one of the truly important figures in landscape architecture.

This book is part of the general discussion concerning women in this country; it is part of a trend and, hopefully, this trend will lead not only to further discussion but to constructive activity. One cannot deny the facts, but perhaps many people will disagree with the point of view expressed in this book. The ideas presented here are based upon research, interviews, and discussion with my male and female colleagues and, not surprisingly, there was a diversity of opinions, ideas, and goals, even among the women. The point is not that women are more likely than their male counterparts to have found the answers to the difficult issues confronting the profession of architecture, but that perhaps they are raising new and different questions which are pertinent to its future.

Women have practiced as landscape architects for over a century, since the founding of the practice as a profession in the United States in the 1890s. They came to landscape architecture as gardeners, garden designers, horticulturalists, and fine artists. They simultaneously shaped the profession while reflecting contemporary practice. The image of the architect is undeniably gendered. While the male architect might be celebrated as the ideal man in Hollywood romantic comedies, blessed with practicality and creativity in equal measure to impeccable taste and an enviable lifestyle, the image of the woman architect is not so clear cut. While women have been practicing and excelling in architecture for more than a hundred years, their professional identity, as constructed in the media, is complex and sometimes contradictory. This book explores the working lives and aspirations of women in architectural practice, but more than this it explores how popular media ¿ newspapers, magazines, and websites ¿ serve to define and describe who a woman architect should be, what she should look like and how she should behave. Looking further, into the way that professional characteristics are reinforced through awards like the Pritzker Prize, the book demonstrates how idealised characteristics such as sensitivity and vision are seen to be neither entirely masculine nor feminine, but instead a complex hybrid owing much to historic concepts of genius. Drawing on history, sociology, media analysis and feminist theories of architectural practice, the book will be of interest to all of those who seek to better understand the image and identity of the architect. Historic sites are visited by millions of people every year, but most of these places perpetuate the public notion that men have been the primary agents of historical change.
