Workshop Description and Objectives

Welcome to the Make with Grasshopper (Rhino3D) workshop rerun (originally held 7-30-25).
Hosted in the Main Library's VR Lab (201A, 2nd Floor) by the Texas Tech University Library Makerspace's very own Sean W Scully.

We take a brief tour highlighting 3D printing and the world of CAD programs.
Then we jump feet-first into playing with Rhinoceros 3D with an eye for exporting our creations for 3D printing.
In this workshop we focus on designing with several methodologies: moving from sketches to extrusions, designing using manipulated solids, and then generating more complex objects and designs using Grasshopper3D.

The workshop will finish with real-time modeling that will illustrate the advanced concepts and techniques gained.

No experience necessary, all ages and skill-levels are welcome!

Objectives

  • Have a working grasp of advanced-level CAD vocabulary (i.e. Boolean operations, Osnap, Extrude, etc.).
  • Be able to import and perform basic modifications to an existing CAD object in .STL format.
  • Be able to generate algorithmic models using Grasshopper3D
  • Be able to export a complex design fully optimized for 3D printing.
  • Educate students on Library Resources for 3D printing.
