My name is Corina Alvarado, and I work at the TTU Library Makerspace. I specialize in textiles and teach various textiles workshops. You can find a comprehensive list of the workshops in the Library calendar.

I have a a background in Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Educational Technology, Art Education, K-12 Education, Fine Arts, Visual Art, Mexican American Studies, Chicana/o Art, Ethnic Studies, Women & Gender Studies, and what I call Creative and Cultural Expression. In the Makerspace I specialize in textiles, and I am careful with words that distinguish art from "craft" or what is deemed "folk art". Some folks that sew call themselves quilters or sewists, depending on the type of projects they do, and there are folks that use a multitude of mediums, or "fibers" and call themselves a fiber artist. It is art, it is creative and cultural expression, it is storytelling.

I am an artist, first and foremost, a Chicana, an art educator, a storyteller and a maker.

Fall 2023 Textile Workshops - August

Visit the TTU Library Calendar to register for events. Space is limited for any sewing workshops; priority is given to those that register through the library calendar in the order registered. Patrons may bring their own sewing machines.

Make a Repurposed Jean Apron 8/25/23 4-6PM
On this National Secondhand Wardrobe Day, join me in making a repurposed jean apron. Patrons will make an apron from blue jeans (or any color denim jeans) by cutting a pattern from fabric and sewing the pieces together with a basic stitch. Bring your own jeans or use some of the donated jeans available.

Repurposed Denim Ideas
Make a Crochet Scarf for Your Dog 8/26/23 3-5PM
For National Dog Day, patrons will crochet a scarf with button closure for a dog. Sizes are adjustable for different sizes as well as for cats. You may bring your own medium weight 4-ply yarn of your choice and button or use limited yarn available. Great beginner project.
Make: Pattern of the Month for September 8/30/23 4-6PM
Join me on this National Beach Day and make flower shaped fabric coasters. Pattern of the Month is aworkshop reviewing the pattern, materials necessary, and steps to compelte it. I will demo the pattern, and patrons can choose to stay and sew or come back to the Makerspace at their own time to complete the project. Patrons are encouraged to bring the necesary materials to complete this project which include per coaster: three 9inch square cotton fabric for front, one 9inch square contrasting cotton fabric for center, one 9inch square of cotton batting. Great for beginners.

Make a Quilt Block for Cherokee National Holiday 9/1/23 3-5PM
Join me in commemorating the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Nation Constitution on this Cherokee National Holiday. Although a seven pointed star is used to symbolize the Cherokee Nation, the eight point star is used for quilt blocking because of its symmetry. We will be making a Disappearing Hourglass quilt block that requires two contrasting cotton fabric fat quarters. Patron can choose from the scap bin at the Makerspace for their fabric. Great for beginners.
Make a Microwavable Fabric Popcorn Bag 9/2/23 2-4PM
Join me on this National Cinema Day and make a reusable microwavable fabric popcorn bag. This project uses a half yard of cotton fabric or two fat quarters, and cotton thread.
Make: Pattern of the Month for October 9/23/23 2-4PM
Join me on this Autumnal Equinox to make a Patchwork frog from meant to make from scraps. Pattern of the Month is a workshop reviewing the pattern, materials necessary, and steps to compelte it. I will demo the pattern, and patrons can choose to stay and sew or come back to the Makerspace at their own time to complete the project. Patrons are encouraged to bring the necesary materials to complete this project which include: scraps to equal 18 x 21 inch rectangle, 1 fat quarter, one 18x21 inch piece of batting, one 32 oz bag of poly pellet (or the equivalent of uncooked rice or deer corn), and buttons for eyes. You can search our scrap bin, and opt for 3D printed buttons for eyes. Great for beginners.
